The Sparkling Jewel of Palos Verdes

There is beauty and then there is Palos Verdes, California beauty. Nestled within the hillside, sitting atop the rugged cliffs that meet the Pacific Ocean sits Wayfarers Chapel, better known to locals as “the glass church.”

glass_church1fixThis peaceful oasis, built by Lloyd Wright in 1951, covers 3.5 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds designed in part to mimic the plants you would find in Northern California’s forest floors. Surrounding the church itself is a grove of redwood trees that are just now reaching maturity. More beauty is added by a rose garden that blooms almost year round and gives another treat for the eye along with a reflecting pool and fountain.

glass_church2This is one of the places I go where I know I will find peace from our bustling world. I take comfort in the natural beauty that surrounds me here. It reminds me of my childhood when life was easy and my biggest concern was which flavor of ice cream I would have that day.  Funny, that decision is still of critical importance to me!

  1. An old friend of mind had her wedding there – small but beautiful. The light is so natural in the chapel (of course) it made her look amazing. Sadly, there was no ice cream.

  2. You forgot to mention that it is in God’s country! Hmmm…about ice cream 🙂
